This page provides information on the outputs from the FFNet workshops/meetings and gives contact details to enable further follow-up with the speakers if required.




FFNet functional food workshops in five Central European States: The National co-workers of the FunctionalFood Net project organized workshops in Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia between November 2007 and February 2008. In each country the invitees/participants were from SMEs, research organisations, education, and public organisations. For more information click here-

Naantali (Finland) workshop/congress:This, the 6th FFNet workshop/congress,  on claims in functional foods took place in Naantali, Finland on 8 and 9 November 2007 in cooperation with the Functional Foods Forum of Finland and with the Finnish Centre of Expertise Programme, Food Development Cluster. The organiser was Anna Hillgrén and her colleagues from the Functional Food Forum of Finland. The event was highly successful with circa 100 attendees. The very complex area of claims was addressed up-front in a practical way and there were many questions from the attendees and especially by those from companies.

VALENCIA (Spain) workshop: This, the 5th FFNet workshop took place at INSTITUTO DE AGROQUÍMICA Y TECNOLOGÍA DE ALIMENTOS (IATA-CSIC), Valencia, Spain on 22 and 23 October 2007 with Yolanda Sanz as local organiser in cooperation with the FFNet management team. The workshop was a resounding success with over 100 attendees including many from companies. A wide range of topics was presented/discussed including the Spanish functional foods market, prebiotics, probiotics, polyphenols, regulations, gut microbes, and a session on the quality aspects of functional foods including encapsulation and nanotechnology.

BUDAPEST (Hungary) workshop: This, the fourth FFNet workshop, took place on 26-27 March 2007 with over 185 participants including many SMEs and persons from the central European countries (CEC). A wide spectrum of activity on functional foods was presented and discussions were held on the submission of three project proposals (involving SMEs) on functional foods to the EU 7th Framework  Programme.

Liverpool (UK) workshop: The third workshop/meeting of FFNet took place in Liverpool, UK on 19-20 September 2006 and there were 78 attendees (see outputs below---). The workshop embraced plenary sessions (all companies) and also sessions on the functional foods aspects pertaining to (a) cereals/baking, (b) dairy products, (c) oils/emulsions and (d) beverages.

Freising (Germany)workshop: This took place at the Technical University of Munich located at Freising on 22-23 May 2006 and there were 72 participants. Topics discussed included (i) food components and gut pathogenesis, (ii) procedures for identifying novel bioactive components, (iii) functional beverages, (iv) antioxidants and lignans, (v) dietary phytochemicals, and (vi) regulatory aspects.  Click below for the outputs:

Turku (Finland) workshop: This first event took place on 9-10 March 2006 with over 90 participants. Outputs included abstracts of presentations and also the Powerpoint presentation slides together with contact details of the speakers.
